In late 2004, Stephen Gillett was in the running for a choice job at Yahoo! - a senior management position in engineering. He was a strong contender. Gillett had been responsible for CNET's backend, and he had helped launch a number of successful startups. But he had an additional qualification his prospective employer wasn't aware of, one that gave him a decisive edge: He was one of the top guild masters in the online role-playing game World of Warcraft (Brown).
Great teachers work on building a sense of community in their classrooms all year long
They understand that helping students build relationships with each other is a key to creating an optimal learning environment.
You can support children's relationships in many ways. Let students share about their hobbies, interests, and passions at Morning Meeting or in connection with academic topics or assignments
ry brainstorming lunch conversation topics with your class, assigning lunch partners, and then taking a few minutes for sharing what partners learned about each other after lunch.
Arrival time can be another opportunity to check in with students and give them a few minutes to touch base with each other.
Games can be a fast, fun, and effective way for a group to get to know each other better, too. Here are a few to try:
In this first episode of the School of Thought video series, the future of education technology is explored by following Rey, a high school student. Using games and simulations, Rey is highly engaged with a performance assessment, which requires him to apply higher-order thinking skills to work through thematically-linked activities set in real-world contexts
“Today’s young people are using a range of digital tools to compose and create in new and exciting ways. It is a game-changing moment for teachers of writing. The very notion of what it means to write is shifting, and educators are faced with adapting their teaching practices to integrate new technologies while redefining writing and learning for the 21st century.”
Docs provide support for collaboration in real time so students and teachers can have a virtual mini-conference about the work in front of them from any location if the timing is right.
The feedback draws attention right to the point that needs to be corrected. In other systems, I have seen all the feedback at the beginning or end, which makes it more difficult for students to make corrections. This is also more formative than an overall rubric, where again students have to hunt through for where the corrections are actually needed. The more work students need to do to correct, the less likely they are to do so.
